CHAPTER TWELVE
âBeck took out a loan to save their cafe, and Nova Beck took a life to keep it!'
Nothing on the rectangular sheet seemed to make sense, no matter how long she read it. All she could get was her name and that of her father... . The rest of it was fuzzy.
Nova's hands trembled badly as she looked at the newsletter. Beads of sweat pooled beneath her chin and dripped on the paper, forming a brown map.
She blinked nonstop, trying to steady her gaze and was clouded with tears. In and out, she took deliberate breaths to calm her nerves.
"What the heck!" she puffed, straightening the paper in her hand.
"Who would do this? This isn't true!" She growled and folded the paper into an uneven ball, before tossing it in the bin.
"It's not true!" She yelled into the open space like anyone could hear her and come to her aid.
The stranger had said it, and she had debunked the news that he was a cunning fellow, only to see what she dismissed as a bluff show up in the most ridiculous way.
Right now, everyone knew of the allegations, true or not, they wouldn't care. They just wanted something to gossip about and Evelyn had given them something to talk about. It had to be her because she was the only one who was in contact with the psycho before he died.
"Evelyn!" She clenched her fists like she would crush her into pieces when she eventually met her again. "How about I make it a tit-for-tat?â She smirked, thinking of the best way to repay her. Perhaps she would also tell the town of their noblest ladyâs little secret.
Because how does one explain getting attacked one minute and then exposed the next, just because they are about to unravel the mystery or they were this close to knowing the truth? This gave her a million and one reason to believe Evelyn was the murderer.
"Oh!" She breathed heavily. "You will pay for this. I will make sure of it!" she assured me. "Just pray to anything you hold dear that this isn't mere rumor... You'd wish you never got on my toes!" she promised.
Not like she wished that Evelyn was right, but that would be the only logical thing to think, because why else would she go about bluffing if there wasn't an element of the truth?
Angry at everything but nothing in particular, she drew out the box from beneath the mattress and began searching through the documents aggressively, only that this time, she was diligent enough to not leave any stone unturned.
When she found nothing like the first time she searched the box, she sighed and got up. Looking around for possible places one could hide a file, she flipped the couch over, the table, and everything that needed to be turned, just so she could satisfy her conscious conscience that it was mere rumors.
The study...
Like a flash, she went to the small study with ancient books that were dusty and rusty.
